In this article we will cover the basics of what freestyling is in balisong flipping, and learn how to freestyle yourself!
I would highly recommend you first read the two prequels to this article, the Fundamentals of Flow and Combos and How to Make Better Balisong Combos, as a lot of the terms and concepts from that article will be used in this one too. With that out of the way, enjoy!
Definition of Balisong Freestyling
So, what is freestyling? Freestyling is a term in flow arts that is used to describe a combo that is made up on the spot without any real planning.
Freestyles are commonly done by flippers with more experience and more tricks in their arsenal, but it is always a good idea to understand some basics on freestyling.
Once you learn more tricks, you can apply these basics to practice freestyling and spicing up your trick library! Here are my main tips for you to learn.
How to Learn to Freestyle:
Gaining muscle memory is the key to being able to freestyle. The first step is the part that a lot of people don’t enjoy doing since it just involves a LOT of one thing: practice, practice, practice.
Drilling the tricks that you know to get them consistent is how you get them in your muscle memory the quickest. These tricks will become easy to do without thinking of the movements of the trick, and you will be able to do them consistently.
Secondly, you’ll need to practice adding those into combos. So, experiment and figure out different ways that you can get in and out of your favo\rite tricks.
Here’s an example video, where I show you three ways to get into a Reverse Behind the 8 Ball:
Conclusion:
So, to conclude, there is no magic technique or simple tip to make you able to freestyle. All it takes is dedication, practice, and experience.
To prove this, I have two freestyle posts from my own Instagram, one year apart, to show you the difference.
Thank you for reading and keep flipping, cuties!
